Rutgers Symphony Orchestra
"One of America's premiere Conservatory orchestras", the Rutgers Symphony
Orchestra is comprised of undergraduate and graduate music students enrolled at
the Mason Gross School of the Arts within Rutgers, The State University of New
Jersey. The orchestra presents an ambitious concert series that includes 6 major
symphonic programs, 1 Pops and 4 opera performances from October through April
each season. The orchestra has performed at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall,
Lincoln Center and under Australian Director of Orchestras, Kynan Johns, the
orchestra recorded for Naxos in 2006. A great orchestral training ground,
graduates of the RSO and Mason Gross School of Arts can be found in leading
orchestras throughout the USA and abroad. Highlights of recent seasons have
included critically praised performances of all the major standard symphonic
repertory including the works of Mahler, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, Debussy,
Sibelius, Strauss, Bartok, Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Berlioz to name but a few.
Kynan Johns
Director of Orchestras at Rutgers University, Maestro Johns has served for the
past three seasons as Resident conductor at the Palau de les Arts "Reina Sofia"
Valencia, Spain. A protege of Maestro Lorin Maazel, Johns has conducted amongst
others the Israel Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra,
Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Sydney and NewZealand Symphony orchestras, as well as
at La Scala and Covent Garden. Making his professional debut in 1997, Maestro
Johns has conducted orchestras through his native Australia, Israel, China,
Europe and the USA. A prize winner in numerous international conducting
competitions, Johns was awarded the Centenary Medal from the Australian
Government and Queen Elizabeth for his service to music.
